Roy "Big Country" Nelson wins The Ultimate Fighter 10

In a night that can only be described as “odd,” the main event concluded with Roy “Big Country” Nelson scoring an impressive KO victory of Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub to earn The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights tournament.

Nelson started off the fight slowly. He was taking shots from Brendan Schaub and he seemed to be in trouble on more than one occasion. Nelson took the fight to the ground where he looked for the crucifix position which he so often utilized on the reality series, but Schaub used his exceptional hips and got the fight back to the feet.

As the fight was starting to slow down, Big Country landed a crushing right hand that immediately made Schaub go straight to the ground in a lifeless heap.

There were two more interesting moments in the fight night. The Jon Jones vs. Matt Hamill fight went as many people had anticipated. Jones dominated from the opening bell and he was showing some brutal ground-and-pound. However, referee Steve Mazzagatti separated the two and went to deduct a point from Jones for an illegal elbow. After Hamill was unable to continue the fight was in favor of Hamill with Jones getting disqualified. Hamill left the fight with a broken nose and, according to his trainer, a broken shoulder.

The final strange moment was the entire Kimbo Slice vs. Houston Alexander match. It was built up as a stand-up war, but Alexander seemed to show almost too much respect for Kimbo’s power as he continually ran in circles. Kimbo stood in the center of the cage and stalked Alexander the entire fight.

In the second round Kimbo showed off some of his new ground game that comes from his time training at American Top Team. Kimbo had some impressive slams and had Alexander in serious trouble. One site that I never thought I would see: Kimbo mounting an opponent. He did just that in the second frame.

The final round was nothing spectacular. Kimbo stood in the center again and followed wherever Alexander circled. Alexander worked some leg kicks which dropped Kimbo at one point, but Kimbo went on the get the unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).

The other two fights on the main card where Frankie Edgar vs. Matt Veach and Marcus Jones vs. Matt Mittrione. Both Edgar and Mittrione scored victories via submission and KO, respectively, both in the second round.
