The Bellator Fighting Championships have made announced the signing of top prospect Cole Konrad. He will compete in the promotion’s heavyweight division.
Konrad, 26, is incredibly athletic and was recruited by UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar’s wrestling coach Marty Morgan to become a training partner of the UFC champ. Morgan, Lesnar, and UFC heavyweight Chris Tuchscherer cornered Konrad at his fight on Saturday.
Speaking volumes of his athleticism, the heavyweight prospect had never played organized football, yet he was approached by then head coach of the New York Jets Eric Mangini to try out for the team.
A two-time NCAA wrestling champion, Konrad stand 6-foot-5 and he must cut weight to reach the heavyweight limit of 265-pounds.
Bellator conducts tournaments in multiple weight classes, but it has not yet established a tournament for the heavyweight division. The promotion has added several heavyweight veterans, including Dave Herman, Dan Evensen and Eddie Sanchez.
