Penn: White offered me a fight I couldn’t resist

At UFC 123 in Detroit, Michigan, former lightweight and welterweight champion BJ Penn will face former welterweight champion Matt Hughes for the third time.

In their first meeting at UFC 46, Penn defeated Hughes via rear-naked choke to claim the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s 170-pound crown. Hughes then evened the score at UFC 63 when he notched a technical knockout victory over “The Prodigy.”

Penn is looking to get back on the winning side after dropping two straight — for the first time in his career — to current 155 champ Frankie Edgar, while Hughes is riding a three-fight win streak (Serra, Almeida, Renzo Gracie). Penn said that he was originally in talks for a fight at lightweight, but his prospective opponent was injured and unable to participate in UFC 123.

When he was approached with the Hughes bout, it was a fight that Penn “couldn’t resist.”
