Gilbert Melendez, Eddie Alvarez and 8 Others Who Should Fight in the UFC

AUTHOR: | IN: MMA | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is the most recognized organization when it comes to mixed martial arts. It has some competition with organizations like Strikeforce, Bellator and DREAM, but the UFC is looked at as the major leagues—the “big show” if you will. With so many fighters around the world, it is nearly impossible for the UFC to have the top guys at every division on their roster. The program took a step forward when folding sister promotion World Extreme Cagefighting’s lighter weight classes into the UFC. It added a new stable of dynamic, world-class fighters. However, there are still some [...]

Bellator’s Bjorn Rebney Releases Photos Of Texts To Strikeforce CEO

AUTHOR: | IN: MMA | COMMENTS: None Yet

Bellator’s lead man Bjorn Rebney has been clamoring for quite some time that he’d like to co-promote with Strikeforce and put on some superfights. His idea is that the two organizations could do some champion vs. champion bouts and put together a pay-per view event. Specifically, Rebney would like to see his lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez take on Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez. He has also mentioned Hector Lombard vs. Jacare Souza and Ben Askren vs. Nick Diaz. All of the bouts have exciting potential. In defense, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said on the Sherdog Radio Network that he was also [...]

Is Jake Shields Ready To Face Georges St-Pierre?

AUTHOR: | IN: MMA | COMMENTS: None Yet

Newly-signed UFC welterweight Jake Shields met up with Martin Kampmann in his first bout in the organization. While Shields earned the win, he disappointed a lot of people—including himself. “I was being stupid,” Shields said on “The Savage Dog Show” on the Sherdog Radio Network. “I misjudged some things. I misjudged the weight cut coming down. I made a lot of mistakes, but at least I learned from it with Martin before I fight for a title shot. Definitely I plan on learning from the mistakes and coming back a lot stronger.” Entering the bout, UFC president Dana White had said that Shields was one win away from a title shot. However, [...]

Nate Marquardt Promises A Boring Fight

AUTHOR: | IN: MMA | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

Okay… Marquardt doesn’t say those words exactly, but why don’t you all tell me what you think when you read what he says. When UFC middleweights Nate Marquardt and Yushin Okami do battle in Oberhausen, Germany at UFC 122, number one contender status will be on the line. This bout will serve as the night’s main event — yes, that is not a joke. I suppose since it is a free card we cannot complain about the lackluster match up too much. What does worry me are Marquardt’s comments. If you really analyze what he says, he is promising a [...]

What Does the UFC do With Tie Quan Zhang?

AUTHOR: | IN: MMA | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

For the first time in history, one of Dana White’s “big announcements” was actually worth a damn. The UFC/WEC meger that he announced surprised absolutely nobody, but excited everybody. It was a long time coming. The kind of pay the world class featherweight and bantamweight fighters were getting for their world championship bouts would have embarrassed some gas station attendants. But, despite the mass celebrations, this merger isn’t as simple as just changing the name in the octagon and giving the smaller fighters a bigger paycheck. Like any other business move of this magnitude, there are complications. Zuffa has also [...]

Cain Velasquez Saved UFC 121

AUTHOR: | IN: MMA | COMMENTS: 5 Comments

I’ve been reading all over the place about what a great night of fights UFC 121 was.  I guess maybe I’m missing something here.  What I saw, up until the dazzling main event, was a bunch of decisions that didn’t teach me anything.  Cain Velasquez is the truth and Brock Lesnar doesn’t yet have an effective standup game.  I’m not going to go into too much more detail because I can’t say anything that hasn’t been said already.   Suffice it to say that what I loved best about that fight is how much it taught us.  The heavyweight picture got much clearer.  Velasquez [...]

Five of the thirteen fighters — former champ Brock Lesnar, Jake Shields, Diego Sanchez, Court McGee, and Patrick Cote — could be out for up to six months. Lesnar lost his bout and the UFC heavyweight title in the first-round, when the new champ Cain Velasquez steamrolled through Lesnar. Velasquez earned the TKO victory after a relentless barrage of punches that dropped Lesnar four different times. Here is the full list of medical suspensions: Brock Lesnar: Suspended 180 days with [...]
