Joe Silva has been a busy man lately.  That’s almost always a good thing for the fans, and this recent flurry is no exception.  Bader vs Jones, Griffin vs Franklin and Carwin vs Nelson were all recently announced.  A bunch of big names there.  Some have questioned the wisdom of pitting the light heavyweight division’s two top prospects against each other, but its still a fight everyone will want to see when the time comes.  All of the aforementioned fights are big-time matchups, but Joe Silva’s most intriguing work has been done in the lightweight division.  I’m starting to see [...]

I love this stuff.  These guys hate each other.  And they’re both pretty hateable themselves, which is an added bonus.  Even if you don’t have anyone to root for, you can definitely find someone to root against.  Passionately, if need be.  I happen to like the Diaz brothers.  Yes, they come off like total pieces of shit at times.  But even that usually strikes me as funny more than anything.  Guys like this are so foreign to me.  They’re becoming increasingly foreign to MMA, too.  You just don’t see anyone else acting like this.  Brawls, cursing, intentionally bad interviews, middle [...]

UFC heavyweight Sean McCorkle was victorious in his promotional debut when he submitted MMA veteran Mark Hunt in the opening frame at UFC 119. He will now be taking another step up the heavyweight ladder when he faces off against the 6-foot-11 Stefan “Skyskraper” Struve at UFC 124 in Montreal, Canada. Probably the most recognizable referee in mixed martial arts, “Big” John McCarthy, recently did an interview with MMA Canada to talk about the state of judging in the sport. There have been many questionable — and appalling –  decisions in recent memory, and “Big John” sees that there needs to be a change. A bout between two former UFC champions is being targeted for the organization’s Super Bowl weekend event. According to MMA Fighting, the UFC is hoping to add Rich Franklin vs Forrest Griffin to the night’s fight card as the co-main event. The bout has not yet been signed. If Franklin-Griffin was to join the fight card, it would add to the stacked night of fights. A middleweight title bout between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort will serve as the main event, while rising star Jon Jones will face off against TUF winner and another top prospect, Ryan Bader. A heavyweight showdown between two Shane Carwin and “The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights” winner Roy “Big Country” Nelson is being targeted for UFC 125. Though not officially announced yet, UFC 125 will take place on New Year’s Day. Both fighters will be looking to return to their winning ways. Carwin came up short in his title shot against current champion Brock Lesnar. October 2010 is going to go down as one of the greatest months in the history of mixed martial arts. OK, I admit it, I’m prone to hyperbole.  But there really is a lot to look forward to this month.  Several fights to get excited about beyond the mammoth heavyweight showdown on the 23rd.  At the beginning of each month I’ll be taking a look at the three most appealing fights that calendar page has to offer.  Since October features three legit events in three weeks, we’re going to stretch the total this month to five.  Even that might not [...]
