Decision machine Jon Fitch has not been given a title shot despite grinding out five-straight victories. In fact, Fitch has only lost once in his last twenty three fights and that was to current 170-pound king Georges St-Pierre.
The only reason that Fitch has not received his rematch with GSP yet is, well, because he is an incredibly boring fighter. Fitch’s last seven victories have come by way of decision. Not exciting, technical ground wars either. Just long, boring lay-n-pray decisions. Fitch gets the wins, but he never impresses. He just lays on the guy and neutralizes their strengths. Guys like Ben Saunders, Thiago Alves, Diego Sanchez, and Paulo Thiago have all fell victim to Fitch’s grind it out style.
Now the UFC and Zuffa have announced Fitch’s next victim: Jake Ellenberger. The bout is verbally agreed upon and is expected to take place at UFC 126 on Super Bowl weekend. The fight was initially reported by MMAjunkie.com.
Ellenberger is an exciting fighter that has earned his last three wins by way of knockout. However, I fear that he is about to get “Fitched.”
You almost have to feel bad for Ellenberger. Yes, this is mixed martial arts and anything can happen, but one has to believe Fitch will once again install his gameplan and make it a long and uneventful fifteen minutes for Ellenberger.
Let us lay and pray — like Jon Fitch — that this fight will have some sort of action other than Ellenberger slamming his back off the mat takedown after takedown. Anything is possible, but boos coming from the crowd is most likely.
