World Extreme Cagefighting is coming to an end. Tonight marks the final event in the promotion’s history before they fold in to the UFC. As can be expected from a final card in promotional history, WEC 53 is stacked from top to bottom and finishes off with a championship double-header.
In the main event, lightweight champion Ben Henderson puts his strap on the line against exciting striker Anthony Pettis. The winner of this bout earns a chance to face off against the winner of Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard in what will be a title unification bout.
Co-main event honors belong to the bantamweight title clash between Dominick Cruz and Scotty Jorgensen. The winner becomes the first ever UFC bantamweight champion. A win for Cruz means a lot. Not only will he achieve his goal of becoming a UFC champion, but a victory could also put him in line for a rematch with Urijah Faber an a possible coaching stint on The Ultimate Fighter.
Also on the card is two exciting lightweight contests. Opening the card will be Bart Palaszewski vs. Kamal Shalorus. Shalorus has yet to lose in his MMA career and is coming off of a draw against Jamie Varner — who will be competing later in the night. Seasoned vet Bart Palaszewski brings his 35-13 record into the cage, as “Bartimus” looks to extend his win streak to five.
Donald Cerrone and Chris Horodecki round up the main card in yet another exciting bout of 155-pounders. Cerrone is only 3-2 in his last five fights, but is coming off of a very emotional win against rival Jamie Varner. Horodecki has won two in a row against Ed Ratcliff and Danny Downes. The winner of this bout will look to climb up the UFC lightweight ladder when the two organizations merge.
