UFC heavyweight Brock Lesnar was forced to withdraw from his UFC 131 bout against Junior Dos Santos when he was stricken with another case of diverticulitis. It is the second time in the top heavyweights career that the illness has sidelined him.
In his upcoming book entitled, “Death Clutch: My Story Of Determination, Domination, and Survival,” Lesnar details the pain that was caused to him from diverticulitis. He writes:
“I had no clue what was wrong, since they couldn’t get a picture of my stomach. The doctor didn’t know either. He was waiting on the part for the machine. Time was slipping away, and I was wondering if I would ever make it out of that hospital alive.
“I put my faith in the doctors at that hospital. I shouldn’t have. It almost cost me my career. It almost cost me my life.
“It felt like I had taken a shotgun blast to the stomach, and then someone poured in some salt and Tabasco and stirred it all up with a nasty pitchfork.”
Hearing a man as strong and powerful as Lesnar detail his pain speaks volumes. We may not be able to fathom the pain that is caused by diverticulitis, but with the help of Paul Heyman, Lesnar is doing his best to let us give an inside look.
If his entire book is this revealing and open, I will have to get out and pick myself up a copy. Who knows what else the former heavyweight champ could detail.
