Joe Lauzon and Anthony Pettis square off Saturday night at UFC 144 and both are looking to get back into title contention. Lauzon won his most recent fight agains Melvin Guillard in a shocking upset. While Pettis may be most well known as the guy who kicked Henderson off the cage, he’s won five of six, but is only 1-1 in the UFC.
It seems as if immediately after Lauzon beat Guillard he was thrown into title contention due to the upset, but seeing how Guillard has now lost two straight it diminishes that win. Pettis has only won his last bout in the UFC in his debut against Clay Guida he was outwrestled for three rounds and lost his title fight with Frankie Edgar. Neither Lauzon, nor Pettis have enough of a resume to argue for a title shot currently.
Lauzon has only won two straight fights and Pettis is 1-1 in the UFC. Fighters like Miller, Guillard, and Guida all had to fight four, five or six times to have a title eliminator shot. Only Ben Henderson has needed less, but it was how he ran through the competition. He beat Clay Guida, Jim Miller and Mark Bocek and absolutely out classed them all.
For now both Pettis and Lauzon have at least two more fights until they can get their title shot especially since Miller and Nate Diaz are set for a No. 1 contender fight in May. If either fighter wants to speed their way to a title shot it would take an impressive win in the bout at UFC 144 and a dominating fight against a guy like Clay Guida or Jim Miller. Don’t expect any title implications from this fight, but it is a fight worth watching.
