Can Sonnen work his magic again?

Chael Sonnen is back at it again. For anyone who thought the former middleweight contender might tone it down after two straight losses, you were wrong. Sonnen may be done with the middleweight division, however, he has switched his opponent to “some punk kid” named Jon Jones up at light heavyweight.

On UFC Tonight, the UFC’s weekly news show, Sonnen announced that he would be moving up to light heavyweight and face Forrest Griffin on December 29. Sonnen said that to earn another title shot he must earn another title shot, but if he gets there he will take Jones belt like candy on Halloween.

It’s not unrealistic to see Sonnen earn a title shot. The light heavyweight division looks weak thanks to Jones and it may only take two wins to earn a title shot.

If Sonnen defeats Griffin in December it could realistically set up a No. 1 contender bout with the winner of Rua and Gustafsson at UFC on Fox 5.

To think Sonnen will let up on the trash talk to Jones though is ludicrous. He isn’t afraid to turn it up a notch and he knows how to get under a person’s skin. When Anderson Silva didn’t bite at the jabs Sonnen took at him, Sonnen started making cracks at Silva’s wife and home country of Brazil.

Sonnen has already started the trash talking with Jones by bringing up his DUI and this is the first trash talk Sonnen has had with Jones. Do you really think he’s going to turn it down now?

Sonnen knows how to promote a fight and has already started on his promoting of a title shot with Jones. The champ says he knows how to play Sonnen’s game, but does he really? Sonnen is the best at what he does and it may only be a matter of time before he gets what he wants from Jones.
