Joanne Calderwood celebrates her victory over Livia von Plettenberg Esther Lin - Invicta FC

Joanne Calderwood ready to conquer Cage Warriors

After showing the United States and Invicta Fighting Championships what she is capable of, undefeated flyweight Joanne Calderwood returns to her hometown of Glasgow, Scotland, to make her Cage Warriors debut at Cage Warriors 53, April 13.

Calderwood, whose winning streak includes a decision win over Livia von Plettenberg and a first-round KO to Ashley Cummins, will face Sally Krumdiak (9-6), Legends MMA 125-pound champion and Freestyle Cage Fighting 125-pound champion.

Krumdiak comes in with an extensive amount of experience that includes fights against greats like Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc, Tara LaRosa and Jessica Penne. Although she is currently on a two-fight losing streak, Krumdiak has the experience and the grappling skills to be a challenge for Calderwood.

Yet, this is not the first time Calderwood has stepped in the cage with a fighter with more fights on their record. Back in May 2012, Calderwood defeated Lena Ovchynnikova by decision at SFL 3. While it was Calderwood’s second mixed martial arts bout, Ovchynnikova had a record of 8-1 before that fight.

For Calderwood, the biggest advantage she has in this match is her striking. She is a multiple-time Muay Thai champion and has produced some highlight reel knockouts, however Krumdiak seems to have a chin on her, as she has only been knocked out once in her MMA career. If Calderwood is unable to knock out her opponent, she can at least use her striking to pick apart Krumdiak and get the decision.

In addition to her striking, Calderwood will surely have the crowd on her side, which could intimidate Krumdiak throughout the fight. If she decides to wear a kilt-like pair of shorts like she did in her last fight, Calderwood could easily have the crowd eating out the palm of her hand.

Besides the match itself, Calderwood is making the right move in fighting for Cage Warriors. Although she earned a couple of big wins in her matches with Invicta FC, Cage Warriors gives Calderwood the opportunity to test her skills against some of Europe’s best women’s MMA fighters.

If she can pull off an impressive victory against Krumdiak like she did in her bouts against Plettenberg and Cummins, Calderwood may get the call back to fight for Cage Warriors or better yet, she may get a call from Invicta FC to fight the winner of the Michelle Waterson vs. Penne strawweight championship fight.
