There is no question that Jessica “Evil” Eye (10-1) is one of the top – if not the top – fighters in the women’s flyweight division. Now what she needs is to fight for a championship belt.
Although is it easy to say that fighters don’t need belts to be considered great, and Eye has held the Ring of Combat 130-pound title, but having one or two more titles on her record would add to her legacy and Eye has done more than enough to earn a championship opportunity in any organization. While she has gained some success in Bellator, the promotion seems to be taking their time in putting on women’s bouts. If Bellator won’t make a 125-pound championship for her to fight for, then perhaps the Evil one could find a home in Invicta Fighting Championships and compete for their strawweight title.
Eye, who is coming off of a decision win over Carina Damm (18-10) back in June, would benefit from jumping to Invicta. Former Bellator fighters like Carla Esparza (9-2), the promotion’s current strawweight champion and Leslie Smith (6-3-1), a top contender for the Invicta Flyweight championship, have gained success since joining the promotion. Even though she hasn’t fought for Invicta, her fight record alone shows that she has earned more than the right to fight for the 125-pound belt, whether it is against Smith or current title holder Barb Honchak (8-2). In fact, Eye defeated Honchak by split-decision, back in 2008 during her amateur run.
Besides, Invicta FC, Eye could fight for a championship in the NAAFS. She had previously fought for the NAAFS Women’s Flyweight title against Aisling Daly (13-5), who defeated her in the second round with a rear naked choke. It was Eye’s only loss and since then she has won four fights inside of the NAAFS cage. She would be more than qualified for any title shot the promotion wants to give her.
There is no set date for Eye’s return to action and her next match may not be for a championship. But I have a feeling that someday, Eye will once again become a champion.
