The card for Bellator’s inaugural pay-per-view event keeps getting better.
The promotion announced the addition of the rematch between former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight champion and Impact Wrestling star Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal and Emanuel Newton for the Bellator Interim Light Heavyweight championship. Their match will be joining the highly-anticipated Eddie Alvarez vs. Michael Chandler rematch and the Quinton Jackson vs. Tito Ortiz bout, which will be headlining the event, which has been dubbed Bellator 106. Current Bellator Light Heavyweight champion is currently side-lined with a shoulder injury.
When the event was first announced and the spotlight was on Ortiz and Jackson, I was skeptical and outspoken about how Bellator should be putting their champions in the main event rather than a fight against two former UFC champions. With the addition of two title matches to the event, Bellator continues to build anticipation for their event.
Newton and Lawal previously faced off in Bellator’s Season 8 Light Heavyweight Tournament where Newton knocked out King Mo in the tounament’s semi-finals. He would defeat Mikhail Zayats in the finals and earn a shot at the light heavyweight title.
After his loss to Newton, King Mo competed in Bellator’s 2013 Summer Series Light Heavyweight tournament. He earned dominant wins over Seth Petruzelli and Jacob Noe to earn a title match.
Lawal will not only be trying to capture another world championship, but also looking to avenge his loss to Newton.
