It is not uncommon to find former title contenders facing each other inside of the octagon.
So I was not that all that surprised to hear that “The California Kid” Urijah Faber and Michael “Mayday” McDonald would be open to fighting each other. After all, both men are former challengers for the UFC Interim Bantamweight title and are also coming off wins from the UFC on Fox Sports 1 event that took place, Aug. 17.
However, I was surprised to read that they have a good relationship after they had met when McDonald was 16 years old. It is interesting because there are well-known fighters, even champions, who refuse to put on the gloves and face off against their training partners.
Although McDonald and Faber regard each others as friends, they are both willing and ready to face each other inside of the octagon.
Both fighters are fairly well-rounded, though The California Kid may have a slight advantage in the grappling department. Faber’s experience and durability is something that can help him get through the later rounds. Still, Mayday has had an impressive run in the UFC so far, going 5-1 inside of the octagon with his only loss coming to Renan Barao, who defeated Faber to win the interim bantamweight crown.
Even though the stakes may not be that high, both fighters have something to gain from this match.
For Faber, a win over McDonald will solidify his place as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all-time. As for Mayday, defeating The California Kid, will not only be the biggest win of his career, but also could put him in line for a future shot at the bantamweight championship.
