One of my favorite song lyrics is from Katy Perry’s “Firework.”
“Maybe you reason why all the doors are closed, so you could open one that leads you to the perfect road.”
This one of the first things that came to my mind when I learned that rising star Jessica “Evil” Eye was signed by the UFC. Confirmed by UFC Tonight, Eye will compete in the women’s bantamweight division and will possibly fight former Strikeforce Women’s champion Sarah Kaufman, who was recently pulled off of the upcoming UFC on Fox Sports 1: Condit vs. Kampmann event.
Eye, who was recently released by Bellator after they decided to dissolve their women’s division, is regarded by many as the top women’s flyweight fighter in the world. Since she began fighting in 2010. Eye has accumulated a 9-1 record and has victories over notable opponents, including Bellator Women’s 115-pound champion Zolia Frausto Gurgel. Although I am sure she would have been eventually signed by other promotions, the UFC could have not had come knocking at a better time.
Even though the women’s bantamweight division is new territory for her, I think Eye will bring a lot to the organization. She has a toughness and determination that has helped her become one of the sport’s most popular fighters. A fight with Kaufman could be her breakout performance. Like the Evil one, the former Strikeforce champion has a tough chin, along with that knockout power.
The only question is how will the step up in weight influence her fighting ability. If she naturally walks around at 135 pounds, then she will have no problem fighting at bantamweight.
Whoever ends up being her first opponent, whether it is Kaufman or a grappler like Julie Kedzie, Eye will certainly have the UFC fans on the edges of their seat as she shows them what she is made of.
For Eye, she has that champion’s will and desire inside of her and now it is time for her to let it through.
