Despite his last performance against Jake Ellenberger on the last UFC on Fox event, Rory MacDonald may still have a chance to fight for the UFC Welterweight crown, but his next obstacle is a ruthless one.
UFC announced that MacDonald would face “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler at UFC 167, which is scheduled to be headlined by the title match between UFC Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and “Big Rigg” Johny Hendricks. While the Lawler vs. MacDonald will probably get the co-main event spot, it should also be a title eliminator bout.
Including his victory over Ellenberger – a win is a win after tall – MacDonald has been on an impressive run inside of the octagon. UFC President Dana White said he could get MacDonald to fight St-Pierre, who are training partners.
But we cannot count out Lawler. One the same night that MacDonald defeated Ellenberger, Lawler scored an impressive knockout over Bobby Voekler. After Lawler’s victory White said he had wanted MacDonald to face the “Ruthless” one.
As I have said before, a fight between Lawler and MacDonald would be exciting for the fans. Both man have had impressive finishes in their careers
For Lawler, who is a former Elite XC and Icon Sports champion, defeating MacDonald and getting a shot at a UFC title would be the ultimate feather in his cap. As for MacDonald, beating Lawler would solidify his place as the next guy in line for a shot at the UFC Welterweight title.
