Hot off of the heels of their announcement the rematch between Vitor Belfort and Dan Henderson, the UFC revealed that former light heavyweight champion Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida would face former Strikeforce title contender Tim Kennedy.
The Dragon and Kennedy will square off at 185 pounds, at UFC Fight for the Troop 3, which is scheduled for Nov. 6. Although Kennedy has spent most of his career at 185, this fight will mark the first time Machida has fought at middleweight.
Prior to facing Kennedy, there had been rumors that Machida would be matched against the likes of Vitor Belfort and Nick Diaz. Although a fight with any of the three would have helped draw in fans, facing Kennedy will be a good opponent for The Dragon when he steps into the octagon as a middleweight for the first time.
Kennedy is no stranger to facing top Brazilian fighters. He is coming off of a decision win over Roger Gracie. He also has an extensive background, which could give Machida trouble on the ground. On the other hand, The Dragon has been able to withstand top grapplers and go the distance with the Strikeforce title contender.
If Kennedy defeats Machida, it will no doubt be the biggest win in his mixed martial arts career. As for Machida, a win over Kennedy would the start to what could become a successful run at 185.
