Bellator gears up for heavyweight tournament

The four-man Bellator Season 9 heavyweight tournament is about to get underway at Bellator 102, Oct. 4.

Bellator had not originally scheduled a heavyweight tournament for their ninth season. When they signed UFC veteran Chieck Kongo, both he and Bellator announced they that the French fighter’s first contest in the Bellator cage would be a tournament in October.

Bellator tournament veteran Vinicius Queiroz will square off against Lavar Johnson while Mark Godbeer faces Kongo.

Godbeer, who will be making is first trip into the Bellator cage, enters his fight against Kongo with a record of 8-1, with his only loss coming by way of knockout. This could be a war on the feet as both fighters have 16 knockouts between the two of them.

As for Queiroz, his match will be more challenging. Johnson has almost three times as many bouts as Queiroz. He also has amazing knockout power and could easily finish Quieroz in the first round.

But where Johnson has experience and skill, Quieroz will have the desire to win the tournament and earn a chance to avenge his loss against Bellator Heavyweight champion Alexander Volkov, who defeated Quieroz in the semifinals of the Bellator Season 7 Heavyweight tournament.

Although Johnson and Kongo are UFC veterans, Queiroz and Godbeer could end up pulling upsets on their opponents.  After all, some of Bellator’s great moments in their past tournaments have been prospects defeating well-established UFC and Strikeforce fighters.
