It appears that the anticipated light heavyweight title bout between UFC champion Jon “Bones” Jones and Glover Teixeira will not be taking place on Feb. 1 as we thought.
In a call to the media, UFC President Dana White announced the title fight would not be headlining UFC 169 as previously announced that the date was “never, ever a done deal.” He also said it was an error on the part of the UFC.
White did say the Jones and Teixeira title match would be likely take place in March. The heavyweight match between former UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir and former Strikeforce Heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem is still scheduled to take place at UFC 169
Although the Mir vs. Overeem match is the only fight on the card so far, I am sure the UFC will add more bouts in the coming weeks.
In the same call, White also mentioned that former title contender Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson would be fighting around the same time at the Jones vs. Teixeira title fight. If The Mauler wins his match and Bones successfully defends the title against Teixeira, then there is little doubt that we could see Jones vs. Gustafsson II in late 2014.
