It did not take long for Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida to make headlines in his middleweight debut.
When the former UFC Light Heavyweight champion stepped into the octagon against Mark Munoz in his first bout in the 185-pound weight class, there was little action until The Dragon threw a head kick that sent the Munoz to the canvas. After the fight was over, Machida went to check on his friend.
Now that Machida has passed his first test at middleweight, there are several possible choices for The Dragon’s next opponent. One canidate thrown out by UFC President Dana White is former UFC Light Heavyweight and tournament champion, Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort.
White said he was excited for the idea of a match between Belfort and Machida and said that people were screaming that to him on the way out of the arena. Whether that last part was true or not, I am excited about the match between The Phenom and The Dragon.
Machida and Belfort are two of the most dangerous and powerful strikers in the UFC and a fight between them would be a war. The Phenom has fast hands, but The Dragon is a good counter-striker. Both fighters also have impressive grappling credentials.
Belfort is scheduled to take on Dan Henderson Nov. 9 and the way the UFC was talking, it sounded like the Phenom needed to beat “Hendo” before he gets a crack at Machida. He also said The Dragon could fight someone else before Belfort.
