Journeyman fighter Steve Carl made MMA history by becoming the first World Series of Fighting (WSOF) Welterweight champion.

In what the biggest fight in his mixed martial arts career so far, Carl stepped into the cage against Josh Burkman in the main event of WSOF 6. Although Burkman was riding five-fight winning streak – which included an avenged loss against Jon Fitch – Carl used his jiu-jitsu skills to lock in a triangle choke that left Burkman unconscious.

This is not only a great win for Carl, but also a victory for WSOF. By crowning their first champion they have taken their next step in establishing themselves as one of the top MMA promotions especially since they can begin to build Carl into a WSOF star, similar to what Bellator did for Eddie Alvarez and Strikeforce did for Gilbert Melendez.

It will be interesting to see who WSOF officials pick for Carl’s first title defense. One option is Fitch, who defeated Marcelo Alfaya by split-decision. Another choice is Richard Patishnock, who is 2-0 in WSOF.
