The main event match between Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson and Antonio Rogerio “Minotouro” Nogueira has been scrapped.
Nogueira, who was scheduled to take on Gustafsson, March 8, has pulled out of the fight due to lingering back issues. UFC President Dana White confirmed the news with Ariel Helwani. White also said there are no plans for a replacement opponent at this time.
Nogueira has not fought since his decision victory over Rashad Evans back in February. It’s a shame he will not get to fight Gustafsson, as a win over The Mauler would have helped the Brazilian fighter move up in the light heavyweight rankings.
With Nogueira out of the fight, that leaves few options for a replacement opponent for Gustafsson.
One possible scenario could be a rematch against “Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis, who is the only man to finish The Mauler. Another choice would be Daniel Cormier, but the Strikeforce Grand Prix winner said he would prefer to fight Gustafsson in the United States.
A third candidate is former Dream and Strikeforce champion Gegard Mousasi. He was scheduled to face Gustafsson back in April, but the Swedish fighter was not medically cleared to fight. The chance of a match between these two may have diminished due to Mousasi wanting to drop to middleweight and fight Lyoto Machida.
