Despite his lengthy battle with Bellator MMA, Eddie Alvarez once again rose to the occasion and defeated Michael Chandler to win the Bellator Lightweight championship in another classic encounter.

Alvarez not only regained the title, but also avenged the loss he suffered to Chandler in 2011.

With the Bellator title once again around his waist, Alvarez now finds himself in an interesting situation. I could see Bellator wanting to put together Alvarez vs. Chandler III for a pay per view; however there are two tournament champions who are waiting in the wings for a title. Season 7 Lightweight Tournament winner Dave Jansen was scheduled to face Chandler for the title in June, but had to pull out of the fight due to injury. Alexander Sarnavskiy and Will Brooks are scheduled to face each other in the finals of the Bellator Season Nine Tournament championship.

As with Alvarez, if Jansen is still injured and the winner of the Brooks and Sarnavskiy cannot compete than Chandler would be given a rematch due to the stipulation Bjorn Rebney made earlier in the year where a former world champion can substitute for an injured tournament champion.

Being a two-time Bellator champion will certainly rise Alvarez’s stock. Once his contract is up, the sky will be the limit for him.

Bellator fans were behind Alvarez at last night’s event and I’m sure they will be behind him no matter who he faces in his next bout.
