Emanuel Newton on his own road to redemption

Emanuel Newton proved that his knockout victory over “King Mo” Muhammad Lawal in the Season Eight Bellator Light Heavyweight semifinals was no fluke as he went the distance again with Lawal at Bellator 106.

Newton, who won the Season Eight tournament, was originally slated to face current 205-pound champion Attila Vegh, who defeated the “The Hardcore Kid” back in 2012. With Vegh injured, Bellator did the logical thing – in their minds – and set up an interim title bout between Newton and Lawal, who had won the Bellator 2013 Summer Series Light Heavyweight tournament.

After five rounds of outstriking and defending King Mo’s takedowns, Newton emerged the winner and the first man to hold a Bellator Interim championship. With this win, he has staked his claim as the next man to face Vegh for the Bellator Light Heavyweight title and has a chance to avenge that loss from 2012.

However by being the interim light heavyweight champion, Newton will play Vegh’s role as the top person in the company until he returns. This means if Vegh is still hurt and cannot compete around the next time Bellator has a light heavyweight tournament, Newton will most likely face the winner.

However that scenario is unlikely as the promotion is not currently holding a light heavyweight tournament for season nine, now have they announced a 205 tournament for the next season.
