It is not unusual that promotion releases a fighter who is undefeated in the promotion, barring a legal or behavior issue.
Still, It should come as no surprise to MMA fans that Bellator released welterweight champion Ben “Funky” Askren.
In the last couple of months, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney has alluded to allowing Askren to leave the promotion and fight in another promotion. The Funky one will end his Bellator career at 9-0 with one tournament championship, one world championship and four successful title defenses.
Now that Aksren is gone from the promotion, he has a chance to compete in other promotions, specifically the UFC.
Around the time Bellator was talking about parting ways with their welterweight champion, UFC President Dana White said he was in negotiations with Askren.
Askren is ranked one of the top welterweight fighters in the world. With his wrestling and improved striking, he could be an asset to the UFC roster, though he may have to win one or two fights before he finds himself in title contention.
If Askren does not sign with the UFC, there is always a chance he could sign with World Series of Fighting or even ONE Fighting Championship.
