Joanne Calderwood could be one fight from title match

Undefeated Scottish striking sensation Joanne Calderwood has had an impressive 2013.

This past year, the Glasgow native had impressive victories over Livia von Plettenberg, Sally Krimdiack and Norma Rueda Center, but her biggest challenge of her career could be coming at this Saturday’s Invicta FC 7 event. Calderwood will face fellow undefeated prospect Katja “The Killer Bunny” Kankaanpaa.

In a recent interview, Calderwood said she would fight anyone she could fight “any girl” on her quest for a shot at the Invicta FC Strawweight championship.  If the prospect from Scotland can put that first blemish on The Killer Bunny’s record, she could face the winner between the Carla Esparza vs. Claudia Gadelha 115-pound title bout.

Calderwood came to Invicta Fighting Championships with a 3-0 record. After an impressive debut against Ashley Cummins at Invicta FC 3, where she earned a “Knockout of the Night” bonus, “Jojo” has become one of the rising stars of the all-women’s promotion.  She has improved in her skillset in her past four fights and it would be interesting to see how she would match against Esparza and Gadelha, who are both have good grapplers.

If Calderwood defeats Kankaanpaa, but does not get the next crack at the champion, she should at least be put in a title-eliminator bout to determine who gets the next shot at the title.
