As UFC Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez undergoes surgery, Fabricio Werdum will now have to look one of two men as his next opponent.
During the UFC 168 pre-fight press conference, president Dana White mentioned that the UFC plans to match Werdum against the winner of the Josh Barnett vs. Travis Browne match, which happens this Saturday.
Although I would have liked to see Werdum fight Velasquez for the championship in early 2014, a match with either “The Warmaster” or “Hapa” would be a great fight for the next year.
If Werdum were to fight Barnett, the fight would be a good scrap on the canvas. Both fighters have great grappling skills and 27 submission wins between the two of them. However the fight could be just as exciting on the feet as both men also have good striking. Werdum is also used to fighting high-caliber opponents like Barnett.
Still, a match between Werdum and Browne could be just as good. Although Browne may not have as much as experience as Werdum, he has some of the top fighters in the UFC heavyweight division. While Browne has 11 knockouts on his record, Werdum is known for having a tough chin. He has only been knocked out once and that was against Junior dos Santos back in 2008.
Werdum vs. the winner of Barnett and Browne would not only be a good match, but also could be considered a title-eliminator bout.
