Gilbert Melendez and Khabib Nurmagomedov off of UFC 170

A lightweight contest between Gilbert Melendez and Khabib Nurmagomedov was announced for UFC 170 this past weekend, but just as it seemed news of the fight hit the news, UFC President Dana White said the fight was a “no go.”

Today, the UFC President confirmed that the fight was not happeneing. He added that the UFC is looking for a different opponent for Nurmagomedov.

This is unfortunate for fight fans as a match between Melendez and Nurmagomedov had “Fight of the Night” potential.

Melendez is coming off of an incredible “Fight of the Year” performance against Diego Sanchez while Nurmagomedov is 21-0 in his MMA career. I think Melendez could face T.J. Grant or the winner of the Benson Henderson vs. Josh Thomson bout, defending on who the UFC puts against current lightweight title holder Anthony “Showtime” Pettis. As for Nurmagomedov, I think he’s earned a fight with a Top 5 ranked opponent, like Nate Diaz.

Although these two will not meet at UFC 170, it would not surprise me if they stepped into the octagon against each other someday.
