During the filming of the third The Ultimate Fight series set in Brazil, coaches Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen had to be broken up after a scuffle, according to UFC president Dana White. Sonnen is known for getting the better of his opponents in the verbal department, but this rivalry seems more realistic to his previous spats with Anderson Silva and Jon Jones. The severity of the scuffle is unbeknownst, but White has been known to give fans encouragement to watch TUF seasons in the past by giving vague spoilers.
After enigmatically tweeting that Dana White looked ‘fired up’ during a luncheon with media members, the UFC President revealed minor details about the spat.
“Wanderlei and Sonnen fought. Just today. They literally fought,” White continued, “While they were fighting one of Wanderlei’s guys sucker punched Chael,” White said. “They went crazy, crazy s**t happened there. We’re dealing with that right now too… It went on for awhile.”
White also stated that this season is potentially the most intense in the show’s history, and the repercussions of the spat are yet to be revealed, if at all. The nature of the fight was also undisclosed by White, but he did state that a member of Silva’s coaching staff got involved.
“While they were fighting one of Wanderlei’s guys sucker punched Chael.”
It seems as though a few months was just too long to wait for the pair of UFC veterans, who will meet inside the Octagon after the show’s airing. TUF: Brazil 3 is set to debut on March 9 exclusively to UFC Fight Pass, and the suggestions that Sonnen and Silva came to blows during the show make it an intriguing one, even if it is for all the wrong reasons. White spoke of the implications of the spat very briefly, stating how a tussle between the two was unnecessary in terms of audience appeal,
“A fight didn’t need to break out between these two for people to be excited about this fight, because these two have been at each other’s throats.”
