In a match-up between the fighters ranked number 9 and 12 respectively at lightweight, Jim Miller will square off against breakout star Bobby Green at UFC 172 on 26 April. UFC president Dana White took to Twitter to announce the bout late Friday night, which will likely feature on the pay-per-view main card.

Jim Miller has been in-and-around the top for a number of years, going 12-3 (1 NC) inside the Octagon. He has notable wins over the likes of Melvin Guillard, Joe Lauzon and Charles Oliveira, and was once on the verge of a title shot. Benson Henderson stopped his plans, however, and he has been on a less impressive run in the last year. Though his Fight of the Year fight with Joe Lauzon was a showcase of Miller’s improvements, he was then dominated by Pat Healy, though this was overturned due to a failed drug test of Healy’s.
Miller won his latest fight at UFC 168 against Fabricio Camoes, though showed sloppiness on the feet, recovering with a first round armbar. Though the Jersey native may be on the back-end of his career, he is still considered a top 10 fighter capable of beating the very best in the 155lbs division. A win over Bobby Green would do big things for Miller, and put him on his way for a final run towards UFC gold.
Bobby Green has gone 3-0 since the UFC’s acquisition of Strikeforce, and is considered one of the surprise packages as part of the deal. Green was a solid fighter over at Strikeforce, but has shown huge improvements in his UFC run and looks to solidify a spot on the top 10 rankings with a win over Jim Miller. His last fight with Pat Healy showed just how capable Green is, showing great footwork and head movement, outboxing the grappler en route to a decision victory.
A win for either fighter will be huge, and announce them as a big threat to the top 5 of the lightweight division. Though the division is stacked, both fighters are in a good position to make the next step towards a shot at Pettis’s gold.
UFC 172 goes down on 26 April, at Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, MD. The main event sees UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones defend his title against dangerous striker Glover Teixeira.
