Bellator MMA will be making their 7th appearance in the country of Canada—all of them in the province of Ontario. After a one year hiatus, the promotion makes their return to Casino Rama, Ontario on Friday, May 9th for Bellator 119, which will feature the season 10 heavyweight tournament finals and the return of Canadian veteran John Alessio on the card.
The season 10 Heavyweight tournament, which gets under way at Bellator 111 in March, features 8 heavyweights competing for a shot at the heavyweight title–currently held by Vitaly Minakov. The tournament features: former champ Alexander Volkov, Mark Holata, Peter Graham, Mighty Mo, Ryan Martinez, Lavar Johnson, Rich Hale and Blagoi Ivanov.
Canadian John Alessio (34-17, 1 NC) last competed at Bellator 101, in the opening round of the Season 9 lightweight tournament losing to eventual winner Will Brooks via unanimous decision. Alessio is currently on a 4-fight winless streak including 2 loses in the UFC to Mark Bocek and Shane Roller. An over 50-fight veteran of MMA, Alessio began his pro MMA career in 1998 and has fought all over the world including for promotions such as KOTC, Pride, WEC, Dream, and MFC. Competing against all the top welterweights and lightweights in the world, with wins over Ryan Healy, War Machine, and Pete Spratt.
It will be over 18 months between events as Bellator last traveled north of the border in November of 2012 for Bellator 79 at Casino Rama, Ontario–a card that featured a heavyweight and featherweight tournament semi-final. This will mark the 5th time Bellator will hold an event at Casino Rama.
The event will broadcast live at 9 p.m. EST/ 8 p.m. CST on Spike TV in Canada and US. The preliminary card will be streamed live and free on Spike.com beginning at 7 p.m. EST/ 6 p.m. CST.
