It’s been a tough couple of weeks for former UFC light heavyweight contender Thiago Silva, and now, after his arrest, his ex-wife has lambasted the Brazilian in a statement. Thaysa Silva, née Kamiji, was involved in an incident with her former husband when he turned up at the gym she trains at, Pablo Popovitch Training Centre, threatening the jiu-jitsu black belt at gunpoint.
Now, a week after the incident, Thaysa has stated in an interview with Brazilian website UOL that her marriage ended due to Silva’s drug abuse and subsequent domestic abuse. She also explained how Silva’s mental health had deteriorated as a result of his excessive drug use.
“You know what I don’t understand? We had a healthy relationship, we always talked, each one respected the other’s space. He became (violent) over the past three weeks. I think that’s the consequence of the use of cocaine.”
However, it was not just in the last three weeks that she was assaulted by Silva, and she states here how she was too afraid to report past incidents.
“My marriage was over in December of 2012. In our relationship, I had to deal with the imbalance and aggressions. But I never went to talk to the police because I fear the reactions. Even after I was assaulted, I did not speak.”
Rumours surfaced around the web speculating that Thaysa had an affair with Popovitch, which led to the marriage ending in 2012, however she denied this vehemently. She explained how cocaine effected their relationship.
“That’s what ended the marriage,” she said. “The problem was cocaine. He always thinks he’s above the law. My neighbor knew that she should call the police if she ever heard me scream. He had the cocaine paranoia. He came to my house, tore my clothes and pointed a gun at my head. I already suffered some abuse, but I always withdrew because I was afraid.”
Thiago Silva has since been cut from the UFC and is currently jailed without bond. You can read the report from Silva’s attorney here, and the developing story here. The allegations have yet to be confirmed and very few details have been official released, but this is not the first accusation of Thiago abusing drugs.
