Grappling with the Issues: Rousey, Cummins and Smack Talk

I love fight week. I love the excitement that comes with it, the stories that develop, the big questions and the hard hitting answers that a big fight card brings with it.

On to the news . . .

Ronda Rousey . . . The Striker?

Rousey and her team of coaches have stated that when it comes to striking, there is no one in the women’s game that is her equal. The women’s bantamweight champion loves to talk a big game, and thus far in her career, has done nothing that would make her eat her words. But I seriously have my doubts about Rousey being the best in the business when it comes to her hands. Where is the proof to back up such a claim? Rousey has done everything in her fights to prove that when it comes to submissions and the ground game there is no one better. Show me a knock out, or even a big knock down, and I’ll buy into her striking skills a bit more. Until that happens, I’ll have to go with Cat Zingano. To defend her title on Saturday, Rousey might have to show this refined confidence in her striking game because Sara McMann might have the edge when it comes to the ground. That’s part of what makes Saturday’s main event so interesting.

Speaking of Saturday’s big UFC 170 card let’s talk the co main event.

Patrick Cummins Enjoying the Spotlight

From coffee clerk to a co main eventing jerk. I’m a huge fan of trash talking fighters, who talk a ton of smack to promote a fight. Sure , the respect game is nice, but I love seeing two people who legitimately don’t like each other, battle it out to see who the toughest person is. And then there are fighters who haven’t proven a thing. Take Patrick Cummins, who decides to hype a fight by bringing up past scenarios in the life of Daniel Cormier that involved the death of his daughter. Real classy Mr. Cummins. I get that he needs to make the most out of his time, but a win or great performance against Cormier would do more for his career than bringing up old wounds.

What Did You Miss . . .

Speaking of UFC 170, Kevin Thang has done it again with an awesome preview of the event here
