Lack of confidence is certainly not a thing that UFC bantamweight champion and former Olympian Ronda Rousey experiences. Being undefeated 8-0 and having ran through and convincingly defeated all 7 of her past opponents, Ronda believes that this fight at UFC 170 with Sara McMann, she’s going to have the best performance of her entire career.
Citing a few of the reasons at the UFC 170 press conference, why Ronda Rousey is feeling exceedingly confident going this fight despite her opponent being possibly her toughest test to date.
“I almost feel like I had two training camps in a row for this fight. And I definitely think this is the best camp I’ve ever had. The last camp, I started in shape, but I wasn’t really in fighting shape. I went 10 weeks without really being in the gym or sparring or anything. And the beginning of the camp was spent getting in shape, and I had some obstacles, injuries and being sick.” Ronda said. “By the end of it, I was in the best shape of my life. We did pull it together, but it was a struggle in the beginning. Where as, this camp I started in the best shape of my life. And the best performances I’ve ever had, historically is when I’ve had the fastest turn around [56 days between her title fight at UFC 168 and her upcoming title fight at UFC 170]. And I never got out of shape, I started in shape and I didn’t have to spend time regaining lost ground. I spent all of my time improving and I really feel like I’m going to have the best performance of my entire career.“
Rousey also praised her opponent and fellow Olympian, Sara McMann as a reason why her confidence seems to be at an all-time high.
“And it always has a lot to do with my competition, I fight better when I have higher level competition. And it’s the same way with my sparring and everything. I think that also comes with being an Olympic athlete, you’re raised to rise to the occasion and fight above yourself when it counts. And I know that Sara’s exactly the competition that I’ve been waiting for to show that’s what I’m really capable of.”
Everyone is well aware of Sara McMann’s world class wrestling and takedowns, but the surprise in this fight may come from McMann’s ability to strike—a surprise maybe to some, but definitely not Ronda, who is prepared for it.
“I’m prepared in every single area, and she has certain tendencies that we’re aware of and that I’m ready to take advantage of. I also spend a lot of time covering my own holes, and improving myself. Everybody kind of forgets that I won the world title a year after my pro debut. I’ve been learning on the go, I jumped into the deep end where as Sara casually waded over into the deep end.”
When asked if she is going to win by armbar on Saturday, Ronda responded,
“I’m going to win by the most entertaining way possible”.
