Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC) 40: Alvey vs Swofford and Birchak vs Croom announced

Earlier this month, Maximum Fighting Championship announced that their upcoming card MFC 40: Crowned Kings on May 9th at Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada would feature 3 championship fights (bantamweight, lightweight, middleweight). Now the promotion has officially announced the challengers that will compete against the three champions in their respective title fights.

The rematch between Kurt Southern (13-5) and Tom Gallicchio (18-8) for the vacant MFC Lightweight championship had already been the first fight announced, the breakdown can be seen here.

The bantamweight title fight will be contested between champion Anthony Birchak (11-1) and “The Hard Hitting Hillbilly” Kevin Croom (13-4). Birchak is one of MFC’s brightest stars, going 2-0 in the promotion including capturing the inaugural MFC bantamweight title—submitting Tito Jones in the 2nd round—in the main event of MFC 38. The 27 year old will look to extend his 5-fight win streak against title challenger Kevin Croom.

Croom will make his MFC debut riding a 8-fight winning streak fighting for various promotions such as RFA and Titan FC. Training out of Hulett House MMA, the Missouri native has had 8 of his 13 wins come by way of submission. At 5’11″, Croom is a big bantamweight for the class, and will enjoy a significant size and reach advantage against the 5’8″ Birchak.

Finally, the middleweight title will be defended by champion “Smilin’ ” Sam Alvey (21-5) against Wes “Nile” Swofford (9-4). Alvey is coming off back-to-back TKO victories in MFC after losing his debut to Elvis Mutapcic–in a 5 round middleweight title fight. 2nd time was the charm for the TUF 16 castmate, as he knocked out Jason South in the final minutes of the fight at MFC 38 to capture the MFC middleweight title.

His opponent, Swofford will be entering the MFC cage for a 2nd time—victorious in his debut against Jay Silva via TKO in just 41 seconds at MFC 36. All but one of Swofford’s 9 career wins have come by way of KO/TKO–with 6 of them ending in the 1st round. Swofford comes into this title fight having split his last 2 fights outside of the promotion, losing to Tomasz Drwal via submission and defeating Tramain Smith via KO, both fights ending in the 1st round.

“Alvey and Swofford match up so well stylistically that they’re going to create an incredible fight. It has all the makings of being the wildest, craziest title fight in MFC history,” said Maximum Fighting Championship Owner/President Mark Pavelich.

Once again fans will be able to vote on which of the 3 title fights will be rewarded with the main event spot of MFC 40, airing live on AXS TV.
