During the broadcast of Bellator’s season 10 premier on Spike TV, Bellator President and CEO Bjorn Rebney announced the highly anticipated trilogy fight between Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and number one contender Michael Chandler will take place on Saturday May 17, 2014 and headline on the first Bellator PPV card.
Michael Chandler (12-1) won the first meeting between the two lightweights, defeating Alvarez in a fight of the year candidate via 4th round submission at Bellator 58 in November of 2011, to capture the Bellator Lightweight Championship.
A long and drawn out dispute later, Eddie Alvarez (25-3) returned to Bellator for his rematch against Chandler, and defeated him via a close split decision at Bellator 106 in November of 2013 to recapture the Bellator Lightweight title.
The third fight, which Bellator is dubbing as ‘MMA’s Greatest Trilogy Ends Here’ will again be for the Bellator Lightweight Championship.
