Danny Castillo faces Charlie Brenneman at UFC 172

After Danny Castillo was pulled from his upcoming fight with Isaac Vallie-Flagg and replaced with Takanori Gomi at UFC 172, it was confirmed that the UFC would still look for an opponent for the Team Alpha Male lightweight. Now his opponent has been announced in the form of Charlie ‘The Spaniard’ Brenneman.

Castillo lost his last bout against Edson Barboza in an entertaining affair at UFC on FOX 9 that went to the judges. Barboza got the nod via majority decision after Castillo had Barboza hurt on several occasions and almost got the finish during the first round. The Brazilian rebounded emphatically with a dominant second round and winning the third round, though many felt the damage dealt by Castillo would be enough to get the American a draw. He was handed his third loss inside the UFC, however, and now ‘Last Call’ will hope to rebound with a win over a tough opponent in Charlie Brenneman.

Brenneman made a successful drop down to 155lbs after getting released by the UFC due to a run of three first round losses in his last four. He went 4-0, captured the Cage Fury lightweight title and was resigned by the UFC as a short notice replacement against Beneil Dariush. Dariush proved too much for ‘The Spaniard’ and finished his opponent via rear naked choke at the 1:45 mark in the first round.

With both fighters looking to make amends in a division full of tough fighters, this could be an interesting match-up. Both are high calibre wrestlers which usually means the wrestling becomes redundant and the fight will be contested on the feet. Castillo has proven in recent fights that he has some serious knockout power, but Brenneman has equally as explosive submissions, making both fighters dangerous in different areas. This could come down to who imposes their will to the greater extent.

UFC 172 will be held at Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, MD. on April 26, headlined by Jon Jones putting his UFC light heavyweight title on the line against Glover Teixeira.
