During a media scrum in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil–recorded by MMAFighting.com’s Guilherme Cruz, Georges St. Pierre was asked by a reporter who his top 5 favourite MMA fighters of all-time were, and a few of the fighters on his list may surprise you.
The former UFC welterweight champion of 7 consecutive years, named Royce Gracie, Kazushi Sakuraba, Mark Coleman, Tito Ortiz, and Matt Hughes as his top 5 favourite MMA fighters of all-time.
Royce Gracie, of course has long been GSP’s idol, with GSP crediting Royce as the inspiration for him competing in the sport.
Kazushi Sakuraba, widely considered the greatest Japanese mixed martial artist of all-time, although GSP has never spoken publicly about ‘The Gracie Hunter’, it’s not difficult to figure out why he would be in GSP’s list of top 5.
Mark Coleman, who GSP in the past has shared an interesting encounter, involving sharing a locker room with the former UFC 10 & 11 tournament winner in his UFC debut at UFC 46, and being scared of Mark Coleman.
Tito Ortiz, the former “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” was one of the biggest stars in MMA and he did it by using his trash talk to make himself a villainous character and grab the attention of viewers. Interestingly enough, GSP who never trash talks his opponents, takes a liking to fighters who do.
“I like guys who are villains,” St. Pierre said. “I’m not the type of character that talks bad about my opponent, but I do like watching the people that talk bad, it creates a lot of animosity and it makes the fight interesting.”
And lastly Matt Hughes, who Georges St. Pierre has competed in a trilogy against, defeating him twice for the title. GSP has also long considered Matt Hughes one of his idols in the sport.
