UFC 171: Scorecards and Fight Statistics

The UFC crowned their first new UFC welterweight champion since 2007 at UFC 171, the vacant title was contested in a fight of the year candidate between two incredibly tough and durable contenders, Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler. Both fighters stood in the pocket and exchanged for 5 full rounds that saw a thrilling back and forth war of attrition. When the leather stopped flying, and the judges scorecards were read, the new champion was crowned in the form of Johny “Big Rigg” Hendricks.

Now let’s break it all down with how the decision was ultimately scored by the judges, and how each fighter faired statistically in the main event.

Not only that, the UFC 171 undercard featured 3 relatively close split decisions, which we will take a closer at as well.

Johny Hendricks def. Robbie Lawler via Unanimous Decision (48-47,  48-47,  48-47)

In a rare case, the statistics here more or less told the story of the fight. As both fighters stood inside the pocket and exchanged combinations over the five full rounds of the title fight.

Hendricks out struck Lawler in both the first two rounds (15-13, 42-21). Lawler then followed by out striking Hendricks in the next 2 (43-33, 56-34). Making it a 38-38 tie headed to the 5th and final round, where Johny Hendricks doubled the amount of Lawler’s strikes 34-17, even before landing the takedown to seal the win.

According to Michael Carroll of FightMetric, Hendricks & Lawler combined for a UFC title fight record of 308 significant strikes:

As for the judges’ scorecards, there was 2 relatively straight forward scorecards provided by first time judges at a UFC event: Mike Gonzalez and Aladin Martinez, with both scoring the 1st, 2nd, and 5th rounds for Johny Hendricks 10-9.

The one strange scorecard came from veteran judge, Doug Crosby, who while ended up with the same score as his fellow judges, took a different route to get there. Crosby scored the 2nd round a 10-8 for Johny Hendricks, and the 5th round a 10-10.

On MMADecisions.com, all but one media member had the fight scored 48-47 for Johny Hendricks. As for fan scoring, 65% of the fans scored it 48-47 Hendricks, with the 1st round being the most disputed round (68% Hendricks, 24% Lawler, 8% draw)

Now onto the split decisions on the card.

Kelvin Gastelum def. Rick Story via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27)

In the first of three split decisions, the statistics show that Gastelum convincingly won the first round out striking Story 19-9. While Story was out-struck in round 2, he landed a late knockdown in a closely 22-28 strikes landed round. And finally the 3rd round, Story narrowly out-struck Gastelum 14-12, but Kelvin landing a key takedown. Both on paper and on first watch, the fight was definitely close and warranted a split decision. However the one judge (Mike Gonzalez) that scored it 30-27 for Kelvin Gastelum was the one that stood out.

The media scoring had 7 scores for Rick Story 29-28, and 4 scores 29-28 for Kelvin Gastelum.

53% of fans scored the fight for Story 29-28, 33% scored it 29-28 for Kelvin Gastelum.

Jessica Andrade def. Raquel Pennington via Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)

Another close fight likely came down to the aggression displayed by Jessica Andrade over the course of the fight.

The fight was decided by a razor thin 2nd round. First round was easily won by Andrade after landing two of her takedowns and controlling from top position. Round 2 Pennington outstruck Andrade by a narrow margin of 33-30, but two of the judges scored the round for Andrade 10-9 (likely based on her aggression). 3rd round was decisively won by Pennington out striking Andrade 40-33, and landing 2 takedowns of her own.

Alex Garcia def. Sean Spencer via Split Decision (30-27, 29-28, 28-29)

And finally, this fight didn’t necessarily warrant a split decision. It was clear that Garcia had won all 3 rounds, however judge Dan Mathisen scored the last 2 rounds 10-9 for Sean Spencer, leading to a 29-28 score in favor of Spencer.

All media scores had it for Alex Garcia either 30-27 or 29-28. And 70% of fans scored it for Alex Garcia as well.
