Drastic Shift in the UFC Welterweight Rankings after UFC 171


The Official UFC Rankings underwent a drastic change Monday morning, following the UFC 171 event–which featured four welterweight fights that ultimately had impact on these rankings. The official UFC rankings can be found on http://www.ufc.com/rankings, and are compiled based on an average of votes from a panel of over 65 MMA media members from all over the world.

The latest rankings on Monday, March 17th, are summarized as follows:

  • Champion: Johny Hendricks
  • #1 Robbie Lawler jump up two spots after losing a close 5-round decision in the title fight against Johny Hendricks
  • #2 Rory MacDonald jumps up two spots, most recently defeated Demian Maia at UFC 170
  • #3 Carlos Condit falls one spot, after losing to Tyron Woodley
  • #4 Tyron Woodley has the biggest increase with 7 spots, after defeating the previously #2 ranked welterweight Carlos Condit at UFC 171
  • #5 Jake Ellenberger remains pat, and is scheduled to face the #9 welterweight Tarec Saffiedine at UFC 172
  • #6 Hector Lombard overtakes Jake Shields’ spot in the rankings, after defeating him at UFC 171
  • #7 Matt Brown jumps up one spot, riding a 6-fight win streak and is scheduled to face #15 Erick Silva at UFC Fight Night in Cincinnati
  • #8 Demian Maia falls one spot, losing to Rory MacDonald at UFC 170
  • #9 Tarec Saffiedine no change, coming off a win over Hyun Gyu Lim and on a 5-fight win streak will face #5 Ellenberger
  • #10 Dong Hyun Kim no change, moved into the top 10 when he defeated John Hathaway at UFC Fight Night Macao
  • #11 Jake Shields takes the biggest decline dropping 5 spots, after a loss to the previous #12 ranked Hector Lombard, just his 1st loss in 5 fights–and despite having wins over #4 Woodley and #8 Maia
  • #12 Mike Pyle climbs up one spot, defeated T.J. Waldburger at UFC 170 and has won 5 of his last 6 fights
  • #13 Kelvin Gastelum sees his name on the welterweight rankings for the first time, the TUF 18 winner is undefeated and has won his first 3 fights in the UFC
  • #14 Gunnar Nelson another new name on the rankings, returned at UFC Fight Night London defeating Omari Akhmedov–is also undefeated and 3-0 in the UFC
  • #15 Erick Silva not his first time on the UFC rankings, but returns after a hiatus, he defeated Takanori Sato at UFC Fight Night 36

    Robbie Lawlor deserves that spot and an immediate rematch in my opinion. He busted Johny up and laughed in his face as Hendricks hit him with his bombs that have put many foes to sleep. He deserves his chance at redemption the same as Johny Hendricks did after he busted GSP’s face up and lost a controversial decision.

      Agreed, I have no problem with Lawler at #1, makes complete sense. And wouldn’t complain if they had done an instant rematch with no clear #1 contender right now
