The third instalment of the BJ Penn vs. Frankie Edgar has been confirmed for the TUF 19 finale at the Mandalay Bay Events Centre in Las Vegas, NV. on Sunday, July 6 – one day after Las Vegas plays host to UFC 175. UFC Tonight confirmed the news on last night’s edition, with the two squaring off at featherweight in a bout that surprised many when announced.
BJ Penn will be making his debut at featherweight after fighting his last three at welterweight, failing to win any of the three. Penn has now won just once in his last six bouts which led to a semi-retirement, though it was revealed in September that he would coach the upcoming The Ultimate Fighter season 19 alongside his long time rival Frankie Edgar. Penn has lost both fights against Frankie Edgar, with the first being less decisive than the second.
Both fights were for the UFC lightweight title, which Penn lost to Edgar and announced his move up to welterweight after an unsuccessful attempt at winning it back at UFC 118. Now, Penn will look to build another run at the title in a completely different weight class of featherweight. Penn has recently been pictured training with Team Nova Uniao ahead of his fight with Edgar, which is the home to UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo.
Edgar, meanwhile, made the drop down to featherweight after losing back-to-back fights with Benson Henderson, with both having a great deal of controversy. Though the first fight was less controversial, the second was thought of as a clear-cut decision win for Edgar, though Henderson took home the belt at UFC 150. Edgar went on to fight Jose Aldo in an impressive performance, winning the last two rounds and – in some eyes – the third round, also. Though unsuccessful, Edgar cemented his position as a top 10 145-pounder and continued this with a dominant win over Charles Oliveira at UFC 162.
Edgar will be looking to make it 3-0 over BJ Penn on July 6 at the TUF 19 Finale at the Mandalay Bay Events Centre in Las Vegas, NV.
