The #1 ranked flyweight, John Dodson, will clash with the #4 ranked 125 pounder, John Moraga, in an intriguing battle added to the UFC’s debut in Albuquerque, New Mexico on June 7. The UFC Fight Night 42 card is scheduled for Tingley Coliseum, headlined by a pivotal lightweight battle between Benson Henderson and Rustam Khabilov.
Both Dodson and Moraga were unsuccessful in their title attempts against dominant champion Demetrious Johnson, but both faired very differently against DJ. Dodson rocked Johnson in his bout, though was on the losing side of a decision some questioned, whereas Moraga was dominated in all aspects before a late submission by Johnson. However, Moraga’s battle with DJ was later than the Dodson fight, and the flyweight champion has made significant improvements.
The pair have fought each other in the past, with Dodson getting the upper hand and winning a unanimous decision in December 2010. They’ve both gone very different ways since the bout, with Dodson going on to win The Ultimate Fighter 14 season and going 4-1 in the UFC, including three wins at flyweight, while Moraga has been victorious in three of his four UFC fights.
With Dodson defeating the likes of Jussier Formiga, Timothy Elliott and Darrell Montague at flyweight, he has established himself as the #1 fighter in the UFC ranking system. Moraga has an impressive resumé of his own, however, with wins over Dustin Ortiz, Chris Cariaso and Ulysses Gomez which garnered him the #4 spot. A win for either fighter could be enough for a second shot at the UFC title, making this a crucial match-up for the division going forward.
UFC Fight Night 42 goes down on June 7 at Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, NM. Aside from the mentioned Dodson vs. Moraga and Henderson vs. Khabilov bouts, the only announced match-up is a welterweight clash between Lance Benoist and Bobby Voelker. More details are yet to come.
