‘The Queen of Spades’ Shayna Baszler will have to wait a little while longer before making her long awaited UFC debut, as she has been forced to pull out of her fight with Sarah Kaufman at the TUF Nations Finale this month. Baszler was a heavy favourite to win the TUF 18 season, but lost to eventual winner Julianna Pena in the quarter finals of the competition.
Baszler and Kaufman have gone toe-to-toe in the past, with Kaufman victorious via unanimous decision. After Baszler suffered an undisclosed injury, the UFC will be looking for a short notice replacement for the woman ranked #5 in the world. Potential opponents include Jessica Andrade, a rematch with Jessica Eye and Amanda Nunes, though the UFC are yet to announce any negotiations.
Kaufman lost her UFC debut to Jessica Eye, though it was one of the most controversial decisions of 2013 and was overturned eventually due to a failed drug test by Eye. Prior to this, the Canadian racked up wins over Leslie Smith, Alexis Davis and Liz Carmouche, with a loss to champion Ronda Rousey in-between.
With such an impressive resumé, Kaufman is a firm favourite in her home country of Canada and will hope to remain on the card to fight in front of the Canadian faithful.
The TUF Nations Finale card will be held at Pepsi Coliseum in Montreal, Quebec, headlined by a five round middleweight fight between top contenders Michael Bisping and Tim Kennedy. The UFC are expected to reveal Kaufman’s fate on the card within a matter of days.
