Brazilian MMA media outlet Globo has reported that Amanda Nunes is out of her fight with Sarah Kaufman just days after the bout was agreed. Nunes was brought in as a late replacement after Kaufman’s original opponent, Shayna Baszler, suffered an undisclosed injury which took her out of the bout.
Nunes was hoping to solidify her position as a top ranked bantamweight; currently ranked #8 and 2-0 inside the Octagon, a win over #5 ranked Kaufman would have been a big statement. However the Brazilian will not get that chance, after an injury has taken her out of the upcoming bout. Nunes beat Sheila Gaff and Germaine de Randamie in an 2013 campaign which put her in the top 10 at 135lbs.
The injury in question is a dislocated thumb suffered on Tuesday, with Nunes reportedly suffering the injury during a grappling session. Though she is expected to make a swift and full recovery, she will be forced to wait a little while longer before fighting inside the Octagon again.
It is yet to be seen whether the UFC will find another replacement for Kaufman, who seems to be right out of luck. The Canadian favourite suffered a loss in her UFC debut to Jessica Eye in a controversial decision and, although the loss became a No Contest after a failed drug test, she is still looking for her first win inside the Octagon. After both Baszler and Nunes suffered injuries, Kaufman may be forced to wait to make her second appearance for the promotion.
The UFC are yet to announce whether the former Strikeforce champion remains on the card to face another opponent, or will be moved to another card. The TUF Nations Finale is just over a week away, held at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Quebec. The card will be headlined by a five round middleweight bout between Michael Bisping and Tim Kennedy.
