The coaches battle between TUF Brazil 3′s Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva has a third date, as the UFC announced its decision to move the fight to the UFC 175 card, where it will serve as the co main event. The heavyweight clash between Junior Dos Santos and Stipe Miocic will now serve as the main event for the upcoming UFC Fight Night card in São Paolo, Brazil.
This means that Dos Santos will face Miocic in a five round heavyweight tilt, and will one week later than originally agreed. With Dos Santos coming off an unsuccessful title challenge, he will hope to get back on track with a win over the ever-improving Miocic, who comes into the bout with a two fight winning streak over Roy Nelson and Gabriel Gonzaga.
The fight sees the #1 ranked heavyweight square off with the man filling the #7 spot, with a win for the latter skyrocketing him into title contention. As Dos Santos has lost twice to current champion Cain Velasquez, it is tough to foresee what a win will do to his title hopes, but the fight is important and intriguing nonetheless.
In a recent article, I looked into the odd series of events surrounding the upcoming Sonnen vs. Silva fight, with the American speculating that he expects his opponent to pull out. Though Silva has not pulled out, a change in schedule has been made, and this could spell good news for both fighters. This both gives them PPV exposure, and gives Sonnen more time to adjust to life without TRT.
The pair have made it clear they do not like each other, with a number of tense encounters during the filming of the TUF Brazil 3 season. They will get the chance to settle the score at a new date and venue, in what is an eagerly awaited fight.
UFC Fight Night: Dos Santos vs. Miocic is set to go down on May 31 at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil, while UFC 175 takes place at Mandalay Bay Events Centre in Las Vegas, NV on July 5. UFC 175 is headlined by a UFC middleweight title bout between Chris Weidman and Lyoto Machida, with Sonnen vs. Silva acting as the co-feature for the card.
