The UFC have announced that Ronda Rousey will be returning at UFC 175, and she will be defending her UFC women’s bantamweight title against Canadian veteran Alexis Davis. Despite going 3-0 in the UFC, Davis is a somewhat surprising choice for Rousey’s next opponent as the likes of Gina Carano and Holly Holm have been in negotiations with the promotion.

After Gina Carano met with Dana White earlier this week, many believed that Rousey would make her return against the fellow movie actress. Although Carano may still sign with the promotion, she will have to wait for her chance to fight for the belt and may even opt to take another fight before facing Rousey. The current champion will likely be a heavy favourite against Davis, but that doesn’t mean she has an easy opponent in front of her.

Rousey is unblemished as a mixed martial artist, going 9-0 and finishing all of her opponents. Before her second bout with Tate, Rousey had finished all of her opponents via first round armbar, but was forced into the third round for the first time. In her last bout, Rousey won her first fight via strikes, defeating Sara McMann in the first round. Rousey has gone 3-0 in the UFC and is looking unbeatable, so Davis will have to produce the best performance of her career to get past the current champ.

Alexis Davis is two years older, but has a significant experience edge in terms of MMA competition. 16-5 as a professional, Davis has fought – and beaten – the likes of Jessica Eye, Liz Carmouche and Amanda Nunes, and her current run of five wins in a row has led to her cementing her place as the #2 women’s bantamweight in the promotion.

As the current #1 Cat Zingano is still mourning the death of former husband and coach Mauricio, as well as nursing some injuries, she may be forced to fight a tune-up bout. Gina Carano hasn’t fought in 4-and-a-half years, Cris Justino has lost some momentum after losing in muay-thai, and Holly Holm is nursing a broken arm. When taken everything into account, Alexis Davis is the best available option for Rousey, and will be a tough test for the 27 year old.

UFC 175 is scheduled for July 5 at Mandalay Bay Events Centre in Las Vegas, NV.
