The main event of WSOF 11 has gone an unexpected change. Originally, the July 5th event was to feature a welterweight title fight headliner between champion Rousimar Palhares (16-6) against challenger Jon Fitch (25-6-1, 1 NC).
WSOF Vice President Ali Abdel-Aziz told MMAFighting.com that Palhares withdrew due to personal issues. But the matchmaker was less than happy with the development of the withdrawal.
“We’re getting screwed. I’m trying to put on a fight card and be nice to fighters, and now they don’t want to fight each other,” Abdel-Aziz said.
A fed up Abdel-Aziz went on on to say, “I’m getting sick of this, if a fighter is not going to respect the promotion, he is going to be shelved for a long time. I will not release anyone to another promotion. Fighters must honor their contracts.”
It was later reported by Ivan Rupp that Palhares is taking care of his mother, who is ill.
Palhares mother is sick and needs surgery. The fighter won’t be able to focus on the fight, according to manager Alex Davis.

As a result, the co-main event, a lightweight title fight between Justin Gaethje (11-0) and Nick Newell (11-0), now gets a bump to the main event of WSOF 11.
