A crucial flyweight bout has been added to the developing UFC 176 card, as #6 ranked Jussier Formiga squares off against #9 ranked Zach Makovsky. With the division relatively wide open, a win could be enough to get a shot at the title.
Da Silva – most commonly known by his nickname, Formiga – has been inconsistent since signing for the UFC, but his recent win over Scott Jorgensen was impressive. Despite the controversy in the fight with Jorgensen, the first round submission has earned Formiga the #6 spot in the rankings and gives the Brazilian hope for a run at the title in 2014. Albeit just 2-2 inside the Octagon, Formiga’s only losses have come against former title contenders in Joseph Benavidez and John Dodson, who both fill up the top 2 spots outside of the title holder.
Makovsky, meanwhile, is a former Bellator champion who has gone 2-0 since signing with the UFC. Originally pitted as a short notice opponent for Scott Jorgensen, ‘Fun Size’ has had a surprising run in the Octagon and, after defeating Jorgensen, handed prospect Josh Sampo his first UFC loss. A third win in a row over a respected challenger in Jussier Formiga could put Makovsky in line for a shot at the winner of the upcoming Johnson-Bagautinov title fight.
UFC 176 will be held at Staples Centre in Los Angeles, CA. on August 2. The card is headlined by the rematch between UFC featherweight title holder Jose Aldo and Team Alpha Male product Chad Mendes.
