The date has been set for Ashlee Evans-Smith’s World Series of Fighting debut.
Evans-Smith will face Marciea “The Black Widow” Allen, June 21, at WSOF 10, at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Evans-Smith signed a contract with WSOF in 2013. She is coming off of a big TKO win over “The Queen of Swords” Fallon Fox in the finals of the CFA Women’s Featherweight title tournament. Fox seemed to be marketed as the company’s star until Evans-Smith scored what some fans considered an upset victory.
Allen comes into the fight on a two-bout winning streak, with victories over Ashleigh Curry and Brenda Rodriguez in 2013. Her only professional loss was against Jessamyn “The Gun” Duke – who Evans-Smith beat in her amateur days. Allen also has a 5-3 ammy background.
This should be a good fight that could easily have earned a place near the top of the card. It’s also one that could steer the course for WSOF’s women’s 135-pound division with the winner getting a future title shot – assuming the promotion decides to establish the women’s bantamweight championship.
Some folks raised eyebrows when Evans-Smith signed with WSOF rather than going to Invicta Fighting Championships or the UFC though I believe it was a smart move on her part.
I’m sure she’ll get there one day, but being in a promotion like WSOF gives her a chance to stand out and be the face of the organization. It also allows her the opportunity to face competition from around the world that the big two promotions aren’t necessarily looking at.
But like all fighters, Evans-Smith’s journey to the top begins with that first step and that will come in June.
