Former Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight champion and former title contender Miesha “Cupcake” Tate may be at a crossroads in her career.
According to a report from MMAFighting.com, Tate revealed that she has one fight left on her current UFC contract and she hasn’t begun contract negotiations with the UFC, though she would like to sign a new deal before her next bout. She also said she does “want to get paid more.”
“I think my stock’s gone up a lot since fighting in the UFC. I think the contract that transpired when I was still in Strikeforce, transitioning to the UFC, doesn’t reflect what I feel like I’m worth. So that’s a whole process that has to happen.”
In all three of her fights, Tate made $28,000 to show, while getting another $28 K when she defeated Liz Carmouche in her last fight.
I agree that she’s earned her a spot on the UFC roster and she broke out as one of the stars of the women’s 135-pound division, mostly due to her rivalry with Ronda Rousey. She also participates in some of the promotional and media for the UFC. This certainly makes her an asset for the organization as she is someone they can rely on to do appearances.
Tate’s win over Carmouche gives her the edge in this upcoming contract negotiations. I think she should get a raise, but if she wants to make the big money, she’s got to win her next match – and UFC needs to pay the women fighters better, but that’s a topic for another day.
Tate has expressed interest in fighting Gina Carano, a main event match that could draw money no matter what promotion puts it together.
Even if Cupcake doesn’t sign with the UFC, she’d be one of the hottest – no pun intended – free agents in the sport. If she wants to fight, there are plenty promotions who would take her at a drop of a time. But if she wants to make money, the UFC is the only place to go.
